Description:
SomnoGuard splints are an option for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. They are made of a thermoplastic material that softens when heated in a boiling water bath and molds to the individual's tooth and jaw formation when fitted in the mouth.
Wearing the splint at night can reduce or eliminate snoring and breathing cessations. The splints cause the desired advancement of the lower jaw and tongue, thus opening the airway. This keeps the soft tissue and muscles of the upper airway taut so that the tongue does not fall backward and narrow the airway. Vibration and fluttering of the soft tissue (soft palate and uvula) are reduced or, in the best case, even prevented.
These splints were not designed as a so-called grinding splint for bruxism patients. Those who suffer from teeth grinding should talk to their dentist about therapeutic alternatives.
