Description:
This project develops a specialized lexicon in German Sign Language (DGS) from the fields of mathematics, physics, earth sciences, chemistry, biology and medicine. The aim is to improve the participation opportunities for deaf people in school, technical training, university and job:.
The software enables the display of specialized signs on smartphones, tablets or PC/laptops.
A sign video can be shared on social media such as WhatsApp, Facebook or Twitter via a convenient "share" function, making it known to a wide community. It can also be downloaded into own data collection and be available in offline mode.
For each sign, additional information is provided: the sign in signwriting, the subject definition, the subject area, and the origin of the sign. Sign2MINT had to develop some of the technical signs from scratch, as they did not exist for many scientific and technical terms.
A team of linguists supports the project from a linguistic perspective and advises on sign finding, especially with regard to practicability, linguistic (phonological) rules and form.
The development of the special software was done by the project group Gamification and Open Source for Deaf Workers in a cooperation of the project team at the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics. The information technology work is financed by the Federal Ministry of Labor from the Equalization Fund.
Sign2MINT is also cooperating with the company Workplace Solutions (WPS). The company develops open-source software. Due to this cooperation, which has been in place since June 2019, Sign2MINT also does not have to finance a new database solution itself.
The development work and the results of this project will be taken up and further developed by the new collaborative project "Digital support for job integration of deaf people".
