Description:
The LifeVest portable cardioverter-defibrillator is worn by patients who are at risk having sudden cardiac death (PHT). The system continuously monitors the patients heart and alerts the patient in the event of abnormalities by voice instructions. If the person concerned does not react to the warnings, the system can start resuscitation on its own. This ensures that if the patient becomes unconscious, the life-sustaining measures are carried out. If the person concerned switches off the process, a false arrhythmia detection is prevented from triggering an unnecessary treatment shock. This is one of the main differences between a portable and an implanted defibrillator. The entire process, from detecting the arrhythmia to delivering the treatment shock, takes less than a minute. If the arrhythmia continues after the first treatment shock, up to five additional shocks are administered. Shortly before treatment, the electrodes release some gel so that the shock can be delivered effectively and avoid burns and other skin damage. The system is carried in the form of a vest and a belt to which a monitor is attached for monitoring and control. The information is automatically transferred from the LifeVest system to the LifeVest network and can then be viewed by the attending physician from any computer with an Internet connection.
