Light therapy is now used as a standard therapy for winter depression, which is produced by a lack of daylight. Daylight is needed to produce the happiness hormone serotonin and to curb the sleep hormone melatonin. Common symptoms of winter depression (seasonal affective disorder SAD) include fatigue, anxiety, weakened cognitive performance, poor sleep quality and uncontrolled eating patterns. In clinical trials, Valkee light cured 9 out of 10 people suffering from severe forms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), or "winter depression."
Valkee uses a new form of therapy: the bright light is delivered to the brain through the ear canal, where the skull is thinnest. The brain has light-sensitive sections that are stimulated by the light.
