A worn artificial eye causes discomfort in the eye socket. The rough surface of the prosthesis can severely irritate the eye socket. The first sign that the prosthesis needs to be replaced is an increased flow of tears. The eye socket becomes reddened and thick, yellowish secretions may appear as the process progresses. At this stage, ophthalmological help must be sought to prevent the inflammation from spreading to the entire eye socket. Regular checks of the eye socket by your ophthalmologist and the possible annual renewal of the ocular prosthesis by a specialist ocularist ensure that the artificial eye can be worn without any problems.
Outside Europe, various countries are supplied with collection eyes (ocular prostheses in various colors, sizes and anatomical shapes). Furthermore, custom-made products for clinical use (e.g. Illig shells, perforated prostheses) are also available.
Costs:
In Germany, all statutory health insurers cover the costs of ocular prostheses. A co-payment of EUR 10 remains, unless there is an exemption from the co-payment.
