The Valkee Humancharger is an effective way of getting the daily dose of light you need in the dark autumn and winter months - even when you're on the move: the device can be hung around your neck. Humancharger (Valkee 3) directs bright light into the light-sensitive regions of the brain. The practical device only needs to be used for twelve minutes a day to mimic a satisfactory dose of sunlight.
Light therapy is now used as a standard therapy for winter depression caused by a lack of daylight. Daylight is needed to produce the happiness hormone serotonin and to reduce the sleep hormone melatonin. The common symptoms of winter depression (seasonal affective disorder SAD) are fatigue, anxiety, impaired cognitive performance, poor sleep quality and uncontrolled eating behavior.
