Description:
Foot drop (peroneal nerve palsy) is damage to the peroneal nerve, which controls the lifting of the
foot. In such a case, natural walking is very difficult or not possible at all. Another possible problem resulting from a weak foot dorsiflexion could possibly be a permanent incorrect posture of the body with the resulting consequences.
The innoSTEP-WL surface stimulator can provide relief with the help of functional electrical stimulation (FES). To ensure that the foot lifts at the right moment, the heel switch sends a signal to the stimulator attached to the calf when it moves. This sends an external electrical impulse to the peroneal nerve. This allows the foot to lift at the right moment.
The repeatedly transmitted impulses are perceived by the nerve structures located in the brain and spinal cord (CNS) and managed and processed as motor stimuli. This can lead to stable neuronal rewiring, a better gait pattern and increased mobility.
