Description:
Pain signals travel along the nerves to the brain, where they are perceived as pain sensations. In cases of severe chronic pain or intolerance to medication for pain management, neurostimulation offers a possible alternative.
In neurostimulation, a neurostimulation device is placed under the skin through a minimally invasive procedure and sends weak electrical pulses to the spinal nerves through a thin electrode implanted near the spinal cord. These electrical impulses mask pain signals in the brain so that instead of pain, a mild, pleasant tingling sensation is felt. Using an external device, the intensity of the tingling can be adjusted so that the sensation of pain can be controlled and minimised in everyday life itself.
In the RestoreSensor neurostimulator, an acceleration sensor also detects the body posture, stores it and adjusts its stimulation intensity to the respective body posture.
Permanent implantation of the neurostimulation device is preceded by a test phase lasting several weeks, during which the tolerance and efficiency of the device is tested on the patient.
