Product Type:
Stimulator with partial implants
Technology: Phrenic nerve stimulator
Description:
Central respiratory insufficiency can be caused by injuries to the cervical spine at the C2 level. Hypoventilation is often caused by congenital or acquired injuries such as stroke, tumors or intoxication. In these cases, there is a dependency on respiratory support.
As an alternative to a mechanical respirator, physiological ventilation using an implanted atrostim phrenic nerve stimulator (PNS) can be considered. Nerve electrodes and stimulators are implanted surgically. For assurance, two independent stimulators are always used, which are fixed to the induction coils. The diaphragm muscle is stimulated by the electrical impulses and thus enables physiological breathing (warmed up and cleansed breath). Under certain circumstances, blocked tracheostomy tubes are replaced, which also enables speech (closure valve, phonation window).
The constant increase in breathing volume can then be achieved by training the diaphragm muscle. This is also supported by the function of the regular sigh. The patient is therefore significantly freer and more independent in their movements with the Atrostim 2.0 phrenic nerve stimulator.
